Dental Fear & Anxiety: How We Help You

We Want You to Be as Comfortable as Possible

Are you a little afraid of going to the dentist? If you have dental fear or anxiety, you’re not alone. At Peace Haven Family Dentistry, we understand, and we want you to be as comfortable as possible. So, no matter what your level of anxiety may be, we are your partner in achieving better dental health and better overall health.

Managing Your Dental Anxiety

The good news is that there are a few things you can do to help yourself through your dental visit. Many patients feel more comfortable by distracting themselves: focusing on breathing slowly and regularly, listening to music (ours or bring your own with earbuds or a headset), and using hand signals if you need attention during your dental routine.

These are some common fears concerning dentistry:

  • Needles
  • The drill
  • Pain
  • Embarrassment about bad teeth
  • Sedation

We welcome you to share your fears with us. Trust us, you probably won’t surprise us. Our staff is very patient and understanding. We take the time to listen to each patient and help them feel comfortable in a way that works for them.

In addition, you can also do a few things before your arrival that can help your dental experience. We encourage you to avoid caffeine prior to your dental appointment. And eating high-protein foods—unlike sugary foods—can help produce a calming effect. You should also schedule your dental visit during a low-stress time. Choose a time of day for your dental visit when you’re less likely to be rushed, stressed, or under pressure.

Communication Is Key

We find that communication is key with our nervous patients. While we do communicate well with all patients, we take a little extra care with patients who feel nervous. We want to know what your fears and worries are so that we can take steps to provide the emotional and mental relief you need. In addition, we’ll communicate what’s happening before and during each step, so you’re not surprised. And if something might feel a little uncomfortable, we’ll let you know in advance.

Options for Discomfort and Dental Fear

At Peace Haven Family Dentistry, we want your dental experience to be as positive as possible. If you are nervous about experiencing any level of discomfort, we have options available.*

  • Topical anesthetic for numbing and low-level relief
  • Anesthesia
  • Anti-anxiety prescription drugs (e.g., Valium)
  • Nitrous oxide (laughing gas)

*Note that some options may not be combined. We’ll be happy to discuss your options before and during your visit.

No matter what your hesitation is about visiting the dentist, don’t put your dental health at risk. A mouth that is not cared for can lead to other overall health issues and illnesses. Let us help you achieve the best dental health possible in the most comfortable atmosphere.
