You only get one set of adult teeth. And each tooth comes with a natural, protective enamel coating. Once this coating erodes, it cannot ‘grow’ back. At Peacehaven Family Dentistry, we’re on your team to help you care for your teeth the best way possible. We’ve created this quick list of three dental habits that you should never skip—no matter what.
Essential Dental Habit #1: Brushing Your Teeth Every Night
Maybe you fall asleep on the couch, then you wake up and drag yourself to bed. You just want to fall right back to sleep in a cozy, comfortable place. The last thing you want to do is wake yourself up to brush your teeth. You might not fall back asleep! We get that. We’re human, and we’ve been there too. But here’s what happens when you skip that essential nightly habit.
The bacteria left in your mouth from the food you’ve eaten during the day will break down your tooth enamel and cause tooth decay and cavities. Bacteria also causes plaque, which is difficult to remove from your teeth.
Even if this only happens once in a while, you still run the risk of causing dental issues that could result in the partial or full loss of one or more teeth. Plus, it’s easy for ‘once in a while’ to become a regular habit. So, do your mouth a favor and brush your teeth every night—no matter what.
If you still find it difficult to brush your teeth thoroughly before bed, you can at least run a dry toothbrush around your mouth then rinse before bed. It’s not ideal, but it’s certainly better than ignoring your teeth altogether.
Essential Dental Habit #2: Flossing Once Daily
Along with brushing your teeth every night, you should also floss your teeth once daily. It’s best to floss at night for the same reasons that you need to brush at night: to rid your mouth of as much bacteria as possible. The truth is that your toothbrush can’t get to those tight spaces in between your teeth. So, a good flossing before you brush each night will dislodge most tiny particles that can cause damage to your teeth each night.
- Yellow teeth
- Tartar buildup
- Bad breath
- Cavities
- Tooth loss
If you don’t like fumbling with floss in your mouth, you can purchase floss sticks or a flosser with replaceable heads. These inexpensive tools make flossing a quick and easy task.

Essential Dental Habit #3: Seeing Your Dentist Regularly
Seeing your dentist twice a year is just as essential as getting a general annual physical. Why? Because the condition of your mouth tells a story about your overall health. During your dental visit, your dentist is checking your oral health and he/she is also looking for signs of bigger health issues too.
Recent studies have found links between dental health and heart disease, stroke, lung disease, diabetes, and bone loss.
If it’s been a while since you’ve been to the dentist, you can rest assured that we don’t judge. We’re here to help and to serve you while providing the best dental care possible. At Peace Haven Family Dentistry, we love to see you. And we hope you love to see us too. We do everything we can to make your dental visit as pleasant and as quick as possible.
And if the cost of dental care is keeping you away, consider a low-cost plan. You’re not saving any money by skipping. The longer you stay away, the more work will need to be done.
Hands-down, these are the three most essential dental habits you should never skip.
We look forward to seeing you soon!
