According to an American Academy of Periodontology survey, 27% of adults lied about flossing at their last dentist visit. If your next appointment is coming up, you might be feeling anxious about answering certain questions. There are many things that dentists should ask to ensure your oral health. And while some questions may be awkward for you, they could impact your well-being immensely. That’s why it’s so important to find a dental office that makes you feel comfortable.
At Peace Haven Family Dentistry, we pride ourselves on providing friendly, caring, and compassionate care for the whole family. So, today, we want to help you learn how to prepare for a dentist visit. Whether you’re experiencing a dental emergency or headed in for a pediatric dentist checkup, these are the five questions you should always answer truthfully.
Have There Been Any Changes to Your Medical History?
When you’re preparing for a dentist visit, it’s a good idea to think through any health changes you’ve experienced since your last appointment. For example, surgeries, allergies, injuries, and illnesses can all impact your oral health.
Even if it doesn’t seem relevant or essential to your dental care, mention it. Conditions like diabetes or thyroid disorders, for example, could make procedures like dental implants a challenge. So, when in doubt, always speak up!
Whether you need pediatric dental care, treatment for dental emergencies, or a routine checkup, book an appointment for your next dentist visit today!
When Was Your Last Dentist Appointment?
If you’re a first-time patient, this is a question your new Peace Haven Family dentist will likely ask. Even if it’s been years since your last appointment, it’s essential to tell the truth! Being honest will help your providers develop the best plan to address your dental hygiene needs.
When Was Your Last Physical?
Speaking of your last appointment, your dentist may want to know about your most recent medical physical too. Chronic conditions and regularly used medications can both impact your oral health, so don’t withhold the truth.
Your last physical might not be top of mind when you’re at an emergency dental appointment. But your overall health can have a significant impact on procedures like dental crown repair or dental abscess treatment. Oral health and physical health are connected. So, it’s a good idea to keep your family dentist up to date on your last doctor’s appointment and vice versa.
Do You Smoke or Vape?
When your doctor asks how often you exercise or how many vegetables you eat each day, it might be tempting to bend the truth. And when your dentist asks if you smoke or vape, you might want to tell a little white lie too.
In both cases, honesty is always the best policy. Smoking or vaping can cause staining, periodontal disease, or oral cancer. Want to decrease the risks of negative impacts? Preventative treatment is key, so speak up!
How Often Do You Floss?
First off, if you don’t floss as often as you should, know that you’re not alone. According to the American Dental Association, only 16% of people report flossing at least once per day. Your dentist or hygienist doesn’t ask this question to shame you, though.
Flossing is a critical part of your oral health routine. Patients who floss regularly are less likely to experience plaque and tartar build-up, gum recession, tooth loss, and even heart disease. So, once again, it’s a good idea to tell the truth (and take home that free floss)!
Remember It’s Okay to Ask Questions Too
Dental appointments should never feel like an interrogation. At Peace Haven Family Dentistry, we’re always happy to answer your questions. So, don’t be afraid to ask. No question is ever too silly. Whether you’re looking for a dentist for kids or dental care for your whole family, we’re here for you.
