What is cosmetic dentistry?

Simply put, cosmetic dentistry is anything that isn’t strictly necessary for dental health or function, but is done for more aesthetic reasons. This could include replacing old silver fillings with composite bonding that blends invisibly with your existing teeth, or whitening your teeth before a big event. At Peace Haven Family Dentistry, we want you to feel great about your smile, so whether it’s gaps, cracked, chipped, or stained teeth, we can work with you to find an affordable solution that will be both functional and leave you feeling amazing.

We offer many forms of cosmetic dentistry from our Winston-Salem, NC dentist’s office, including Invisalign, Zoom Whitening, tooth bonding, veneers, and tooth contouring. We can straighten and whiten your teeth, as well as fill or close spaces, and replace unsightly fillings or damaged teeth.

How does tooth bonding work?

Cosmetic dental bonding is one of the simplest and most affordable ways to improve the appearance of your teeth, and can be done in a single visit! In less than an hour, your Peace Haven dentist can use tooth bonding to fix damaged or discolored teeth, make fillings less visible, or change the shape and spacing between your teeth.

Resin composite bonding works by first selecting the perfect color composite to match your existing teeth. Your dentist will then gently scratch your tooth to give the composite something to adhere to, and apply a solution to help the composite stick. They’ll then slowly build up layers, hardening each with a UV lamp. Once they’re done, they’ll gently shape, file and polish the tooth bonding resin to give you a natural look. Unless you’re getting a filling, you may not even need any anesthetic!

Front tooth bonding can be an especially popular option for patients who have slightly uneven teeth and are looking for that million-dollar smile. Composite bonding can hide small chips, or subtly even out the shape, size and spacing of your teeth. Most patients find that dental bonding blends invisibly with their existing teeth, giving them a perfect smile without any visible work!

Composite bonding to replace fillings

A few decades ago, your only choices when you were getting a filling or repairing a damaged tooth was a gold or silver amalgam filling. However, times and technology have changed, and we can now use composite bonding to make durable fillings that blend seamlessly with the rest of your tooth – no more unsightly mouths full of metal!

Whether you need to fill a new cavity or would like to replace old fillings, your Peace Haven dentist can help. Similar to the process for any other resin tooth bonding, it takes just one visit. We’ll start by identifying the perfect shade to make sure the filling blends perfectly with the rest of your tooth. We’ll then gently etch the tooth, build and harden up the layers of composite, and shape and polish the filling to make it look natural.

Your cavity will be fixed without anyone being the wiser! Composites can also help strengthen the tooth overall and prevent any further decay. And as a bonus, they also make your teeth less sensitive to food and drink temperatures!

Taking care of your dental bonding

Dental bonding can often last for years, especially if you take good care of your teeth by brushing, flossing and coming in for regular cleanings with your Peace Haven dentist! Avoid sweets and other things that can damage your enamel, and try to keep any foods that are super sticky or chewy away from your fillings.

However, composite bonding will eventually require some upkeep and you may need to have further cosmetic bonding to repair any wear or staining after five to 10 years. Just like with tooth whitening, it’s usually best to avoid any foods or drink that can stain your new composites for a few days after the bonding treatment. If you’re unsure tooth bonding is right for you, you can also talk to your dentist about other options like veneers.

Veneer Dentistry

Similar to tooth bonding, veneers can be used to improve the appearance of chipped or stained teeth. They’re made from a thin layer of porcelain and are generally more long lasting and less likely to stain than bonding. They can be especially useful if you have several damaged teeth and want to give yourself that million-dollar smile.

In order to get veneers, you’ll need to come into our Winston-Salem, NC dentist’s office a couple of times. First, your dentist will need to make an impression of your existing teeth that we will use to create the veneers. You’ll then need to come back in to have the new veneers cemented onto your existing teeth, replacing your enamel. The result will be a perfectly even smile, with absolutely no gapping, discoloration or damage!

Dental teeth whitening

Here at Peace Haven Family Dentistry, we offer Zoom Whitening and can suggest a variety of in-office and at home whitening processes depending on your needs. Zoom whitening can bleach all kinds of stains, whether caused by coffee, wine, cigarettes, or even some medications.

Our most advanced Zoom Whitening treatments take place in our dentist’s office, and can leave your teeth eight shades brighter in just 45 minutes. We also offer quick touch ups that can take your four shades brighter, perfect to add-on after a cleaning. And if you’d rather whiten at home, we will provide custom fitted trays and whitening gel to find the perfect whitening solution for you!

All of our Zoom Whitening treatments are extremely safe, and won’t hurt your enamel. We’re also able to offer stronger, more effective solutions at our Peace Haven dentist’s office than you’ll find over the counter in a drugstore.

Invisalign

Do you have a few crooked teeth? Maybe you had braces as a teenager, but your teeth have shifted again as you got older? Many adults find Invisalign braces are a perfect solution to subtly achieve the perfect smile. The clear plastic aligners are a stealthy and comfortable way to even out the spacing of your teeth without any unsightly metal. Many professionals find they’re a great way to still get the results you want – that perfectly even smile – without the embarrassment of metal braces.

Invisalign treatment times vary, but most adults we see find they get the results they’re after in less than a year. First, you’ll need to come into our Winston-Salem, NC dentist’s office for a consultation, where we’ll make a thorough assessment. We’ll take x-rays, pictures and a scan of your mouth to check and make sure you’d be a good candidate for Invisalign.

If so, we’ll then make a series of plastic aligners for you to wear based on the scan. You’ll need to wear your aligners throughout the day, just taking them out to eat (and brush and floss after each meal)! You’ll get a new set of aligners every two weeks, slowly and gently moving your teeth into position. We recommend trying to wear your aligners for at least 22 hours each day in order to achieve the best results. Once you’ve completed your treatment we’ll also provide you with a retainer, which will help keep your teeth in their new positions.

Teeth Contouring

Contouring teeth often happens after orthodontic treatment to just put the final finishing touches on a patient’s smile. Tooth contouring involves your dentist gently filing or shaving down the enamel on any slightly irregular or chipped teeth to give them a perfectly even appearance. This should be a virtually pain free process. Contouring can also be combined with bonding for cases where the teeth are more uneven. The goal of teeth contouring is just to subtly even out any irregularities to give you a perfect smile.
